THE Triples League champions at Wellington Bowling Club are the Southsiders. They have scored more points over the 20 games they have played than any other team.
They were just one point ahead of Woodpeckers and Skylarks coming into their final match. They had to win it to be sure of keeping their top place - and they won it in style.
Skylarks and Woodpeckers had to fight it out for second place and the winners were the Skylarks, while Woodpeckers have played well all season and deserved third position. Fourth placed Allstars won a close match against Ninchers who were in sixth.
Pauline Wadham, David Harrison and Ian Hollingsworth's Southsiders were in fine form against Maria Mitchell, Paul Mitchell and Martin Speakman's New Rollers. Each end was a tight battle but the Southies were in fine form and the Rollers found it hard to win any of the ends played. The final score was a comfortable 17 – 4 victory to the Southsiders.
Liz May, Alan May and Darren Sparks' Skylarks set off at pace against Trevor Jenkins, Sue Channon and Steve Lovell's Woodpeckers and they held a 9 – 3 lead at the halfway point. The Woodies fought back well but were always chasing the game and Skylarks won it 14 – 7.
In the last game, Matt Lennox, Martyn Beed and Simon Spalding's Ninchers played Debbie Beasley, Paul Kelsall and Barry Cutler's Allstars.
Ninchers found themselves 5 – 2 down early on but they came back strongly and with just one end to play they were two points up, leading 10 – 8.
Sadly for Ninchers they were not able to hold their lead because the Allstars collected an all important three shots in the last to pinch it by one. The final score was Allstars 11, Ninchers 10.
