SOMERSET Women opened their season with a one-wicket win over Yorkshire at Taunton in the Metro Bank One Day competition - thanks to a match-winning innings of 76 not out from skipper Sophie Luff.
Chasing 179 to win, the home side were in deep trouble at 115 for eight, only for Luff and debutant Lola Harris to stage a spirited partnership of 55 to help the hosts to an exciting victory.
Put into bat, Yorkshire were bowled out for 178 in 33.5 overs, with Alex Griffiths taking four for 22 and Chloe Skelton four for 42.
When Somerset replied they found themselves slumping to 23 for the loss of Heather Knight and Niamh Holland in four overs. Bex Odgers and Sophie Luff then added 39 in eight overs to see the score to 62 for two.
Just as they appeared to be assuming control, Somerset relinquished it, Odgers being run out for 31. Worse followed as England all-rounder Dani Gibson holed out to Kalis with the score 70 for four.
Jess Hazell added 29 with Luff before being run out for 18 making Somerset 99 for five which quickly became 101 for six, Griffiths falling lbw to Claudie Cooper as Yorkshire exerted pressure.
Skelton pulled Cooper straight to deep mid-wicket and when Ellie Anderson was out Somerset were 115 for eight, and dependent upon their captain.
Luff reached a carefully-crafted 50 from 74 balls, using her considerable knowhow to take the game deep. The Somerset skipper then dominated a stand of 50 in 79 balls with Harris, who demonstrated sound temperament as Somerset closed in on their target. However with nine needed Harris perished for 18.
Luff then settled matters taking two fours to level the scores before taking a quick single to finish things off.
