HEMYOCK FC’s players reported back for pre-season training last week, not only for the first time since the coronavirus lockdown but also for the first time under new manager Sam Iddon.

About three weeks ago it looked like this column may tell of the folding of Hemyock FC but thanks to new-found lease of life among the committee, it looks as though the club is very much back on the rise like a phoenix from the ashes.

Not only have the committee, along with Iddon, spread the word and managed to attract new players to the club, with some also returning after a few seasons playing elsewhere, they have also been busy securing sponsorship to ensure the longevity off the pitch.

A new kit is being ordered and sponsored by Window Warehouse Devon, while team polos and training wear are to be sponsored by Pallex. Alongside these sponsors, many local businesses have also signed up to have advertising boards at Hemyock’s Longmead home.

Back on the training front, 34 players turned up for the first session. This caused Iddon a small headache with current social distancing restrictions. However, a large area and sensible players meant the session passed without too many issues.

With restrictions being further lifted and recreational football being given the green light to recommence, it may be that the three friendlies Hemyock have pencilled in can go ahead but we await official confirmation. So far Iddon has lined up friendlies against Wellington A, Chudleigh and Axminster Reserves. Long may the revival continue.
