ONE of Wellington AFC's coaches, Mike Bird, has been named as Somerset FA’s Volunteer of the Month for May.
Mike runs the club’s Ability Counts section which caters for adults and juniors (11 years upwards) with disabilities and other health issues.
Last month saw people across Somerset voting for disability team coaches and, after receiving several nominations, he was awarded a £100 OneForAll voucher as the winner.
Comments included: "He is a fantastic coach, friendly and knowledgeable – he makes everyone feel involved and is clear when coaching. He makes it fun and relaxed for everyone".
Another nomination stated: “He welcomes everyone into the club with open arms, and with his patience for players and passion to support us with the game makes him the best coach I’ve ever worked with in 20 years."
Dan Eustice from Somerset FA said: "We would like to congratulate Mike on winning Volunteer of the Month for his work within disability football at Wellington AFC.
“The Volunteer of the Month campaign has been set up by Somerset FA to recognise and reward volunteers across Somerset for their hard work and dedication in grassroots football.
“It's clear from the comments from people who nominated Mike that he deserves this award - he goes above and beyond for players as well as parents, and has a really positive impact on them, as well as their mental health.
“Mike has also helped create an environment where everyone feels comfortable, safe and welcome.
“He is a great role model to all at Wellington, and to others across Somerset. Well done."
Wellington AFC’s chairman, Mike Hall, added: “This is brilliant news and well deserved. Congratulations, Mike.”
