WELLINGTON side Moortown St Malachy’s maintained their 100 per cent record in Division Two of the Somerset Sunday Football League with a stylish 7-1 home win over previously unbeaten Cotford Rovers.
It enabled Moortown to stay three points clear of second-placed Nether Stowey, both sides having played five matches.
Playing at the Playing Field, Moortown went ahead in the 24th minute when Jack Bryant produced a cool finish following good build-up play by Tom Davies and Luke Perry; and he netted again 14 minutes later.
Ben Evett made it 3-0 in the 40th minute after good footwork on the edge of the penalty area, before Cotford scored from a free kick after 44 minutes. Just before the interval, Evett made it 4-1 by netting from the penalty spot.
Any hopes of a fightback by Rovers were dashed in the 48th minute when Luke Perry netted with a tremendous volley.
Arron Hawkings latched onto a through ball by Bryant to score Moortown’s sixth goal and the scoring was completed after an hour’s play when Alex Davey netted his first goal of the season to make it 7-1.
Top scorers in the division were Williton who beat Strong Mentality 12-2 away while Northwalls United were 8-2 home winners over Highbridge Warriors.
Meanwhile, Moortown will be looking to maintain their fine start to the season when they play away to Highbridge Warriors in a league match on Sunday, October 11.
Nether Stowey are home to unbeaten Butlins while fourth-placed Williton entertain Northwalls United.
