HAVING won a league match by the odd point recently, Wiveliscombe found themselves losing 19-18 away to Chard in the second round of the Counties One South Plate competition.
This cup game was played on Friday night, October 24, under the floodlights at the South Somerset club’s ground and was a tightly contested match with little to choose between the two teams as the final score proved .
The teams play at the same level in the league set up with Chard third in the North section while Wivey are lying second in the West section.
Wiveliscombe’s points came from tries through flanker Will Ruell and centre Will Thorne while fly half Dan Quick converted one of the tries and also kicked two penalties. However, the Wivey boys just came up short on a night when the match could have won by either side.
Wiveliscombe’s next match in Counties One Western West is not until Saturday, November 8, when they play away to Kingsbridge in the league. Their opponents have made a steady start to the season, having won three of their five matches, losing the other two.
Wiveliscombe have the same number of points as leaders Paignton but the Devon side have a superior points difference. Redruth’s second team, in third spot, also have the same number of points as Wivey and Paignton.
