EMERGENCY services attended a multi-vehicle crash on the M5 motorway near Wellington on Friday afternoon (May 8) which caused lengthy delays for traffic heading north.

Two lanes of the motorway were closed between junction 26 for Wellington and junction 25 for Taunton, with vehicles able to pass slowly in the third lane.

The crash happened on the Taunton side of the Taunton Deane Service Station at about 2.30 pm and the carriageways were closed until about 4.30 pm.

Congestion also hit the southbound lanes as motorists slowed to look at the crash scene.

Junction 26 is currently subject to narrowed lanes and a 50 mph speed limit enforced by average speed cameras while National Highways carries out drainage improvement work.

There was no information available about any casualties from the incident.
