TOWN councillors have backed the idea of Wellington having its own ‘day’ to celebrate everything that is good about it.

A Wellington Day festival drew support from residents when the council carried out a public survey earlier in the summer.

Now, the council will work on organising and costing an event with a ‘family activity’ theme, with the first one taking place in 2027.

It is likely to be held in Wellington Recreation Ground and could include entertainment such as a medieval re-enactment group.

The event will be on the nearest Saturday to August 16 annually, which is thought to be the date in 1215 when King John signed a charter granting Wellington its market town status shortly after he signed the Magna Carta.
